The essay analyses how Philip Roth has portrayed his life as a literary author in his own novels through the creation of a character that embodies the figure behind those texts and under the readers’ eyes. Following the transformations of Roth’s authorial doppelganger Nathan Zuckerman throughout his nine novels, it is then possible to look at a self-built image of what it means to be an author in modern society from the very beginning to the very end.
