[IV, 12, 02/11/18] BEING ANIMAL, BEING HUMANESSERE ANIMALI, ESSERE UMANI

The essay shows some examples of animals present in Renaissance representations: on the one hand they are mute witnesses of supernatural revelations, on the other hand they are capable of moving and ‘speaking’ on behalf of divine truth. Like ‘spatial pointers’ within their respective scenes, these creatures exibit a pose and an emotional response, parallelling those of the Saints present in the same depictions. So we can implicitly interrogate the prevailing Renaissance construction of animals as creatures limited solely to sensation and natural impulse.

Il saggio mostra alcuni esempi di animali presenti nelle rappresentazioni rinascimentali: da un lato testimoni muti delle rivelazioni sovrannaturali, dall’altro lato capaci di muoversi e ‘parlare’ a nome della verità divina. Come ‘puntatori spaziali’ all’interno delle rispettive scene, queste creature acquisiscono proprietà umane e spesso mostrano una posizione e una risposta emozionale parallela a quelle dei santi presenti nelle stesse raffigurazioni. Tutto questo implicitamente interroga la costruzione rinascimentale prevalente, che vede gli animali come creature limitate esclusivamente alla sensazione e all’impulso naturale.
