[IX, 21, 23] STAY INTERDISCIPLINARY, STAY INDISCIPLINATEINTERDISCIPLINARITÀ E INDISCIPLINARITÀ

Judith Butler’s philosophical outlook is quite different from those of ‘institutional’ philosophy, which she avoids, instead preferring to expand its conventional limits and facilitate interdisciplinarity. Butler is the internationally leading exponent of queer theory. She deconstructs the categories of sex and gender to show that they are not natural, but cultural, as they derive from the repetition of social norms that have the performative power to produce what they name and exclude what does not conform to their standard of normality. By revealing the performativity of norms, she demonstrates how they may be subverted. Butler’s methodology is interdisciplinary and it is for this reason that she traces the subversive repetition in Sophocles’ Antigone. In this work, sexual categories and the structure of kinship are altered, as Antigone assumes male status and desires her brother.

Judith Butler ha una prospettiva eccentrica rispetto alla filosofia cosiddetta ‘istituzionale’, a cui oppone una certa resistenza al fine di ampliarne i limiti stabiliti e mantenere una certa libertà di movimento in contesti interdisciplinari. Butler è passata alla ribalta internazionale come esponente di spicco della teoria queer per aver decostruito le categorie di sesso e genere, mostrando che non hanno un carattere naturale, ma culturale, in quanto sono il prodotto di un processo di ripetizione delle norme sociali, che hanno il potere performativo di produrre ciò che nominano ed escludere quanto non è conforme allo standard di normalità da esse delineato. Scoprendo la performatività delle norme, si scopre, però, anche la possibilità di sovvertirle. Butler rintraccia un esempio di ripetizione sovversiva delle norme nel teatro greco, nell’Antigone sofoclea, colei che altera le categorie sessuali e la struttura della parentela, assumendo uno status maschile e nutrendo una particolare predilezione per il fratello.
