The contribution aims to show what the fundamental characteristic of landscape is, as an object of experience and as a theoretical object. After briefly situating the origin of landscape in modernity, and thus showing that landscape is the symbolic form of an entire epoch, it emerges that its nature is that of a boundary object, on the borderline between nature and culture. Deepening this characteristic reveals, on the one hand, how the landscape mirrors the process through which culture takes place, and on the other, how the natural component that inhabits it is not only to be found beyond the boundary that describes it, but above all in the space in which it is inscribed.

Il contributo si propone di mostrare quale sia la caratteristica fondamentale del paesaggio, come oggetto di esperienza e come oggetto teorico. Dopo aver situato brevemente l’origine del paesaggio nella modernità, e aver così mostrato che il paesaggio è la forma simbolica di un’intera epoca, ci si accorge che la sua natura è quella di un oggetto di confine, al confine tra natura e cultura. Approfondendo questa caratteristica, emerge, da un lato, come il paesaggio rispecchi il processo attraverso il quale si realizza la cultura, e dall’altro, come la componente naturale che lo abita non si trovi solo oltre il confine che lo descrive, ma soprattutto nello spazio in cui è inscritto.
