What if, instead of constantly returning to Sartre’s theory of poetry, which is sharply opposed to prose, we were to examine the poetic forms that appear ‘in practice’ in Sartre’s literary prose? This is what we attempt to do here, studying in turn the revival of the mystical form (La Nausée, L’Enfance d’un chef, Le Sursis), the attempt at a free verse poem (Carnets de la drôle de guerre), the play on octosyllables and alexandrines, and the invention of nauseating poetry: a phonic ‘excess’, a game of repetitions taken to the extreme, will make us feel that ontological excess that is contingency, in the very language of the text and of the reader.

E se, invece di tornare costantemente alla teoria poetica di Sartre, che si oppone nettamente alla prosa, esaminassimo le forme poetiche che appaiono ‘in pratica’ nella prosa letteraria di Sartre? È ciò che cerchiamo di fare qui, studiando a turno la rinascita della forma mistica (La Nausée, L’Enfance d’un chef, Le Sursis), il tentativo di un poema in versi liberi (Carnets de la drôle de guerre), il gioco sugli ottosillabi e gli alessandrini e l’invenzione della poesia nauseante: un ‘eccesso’ fonico, un gioco di ripetizioni portato all’estremo, ci farà sentire quell’eccesso ontologico che è la contingenza, nel linguaggio stesso del testo e del lettore.
